Prior to the current technological revolution, all mail and correspondence came in the morning post. If you wanted to contact someone instantly, your only option was to pick up the phone and call them. Today, you have a multitude of options, including calling, texting, emailing, facetime, Skype, and many other means of conversation.

It also provides people with the ability to easily share documents instantaneously and from anywhere in the world. Another important change that email brought about was the ability to contact hundreds or thousands of people instantly, with one click, for free.

#2. Social Media

Social media has provided businesses with a way to advertise to a wide range of people and other businesses for free. LinkedIn allows businesses to target individuals and companies based on size, location, business type, and more. This allows them to advertise to only certain executive levels, helping to target potential talent in a way that is not possible with a traditional job listing.

Paid advertising and increased customer service are two other ways that social media has changed the way companies do businesses. Before, if a dissatisfied customer wanted to contact a company, they would have to call the company and speak to a customer service representative. Now, it is possible to “tweet” a company using their twitter handle and receive an almost instant response that way. 

#3. The Cloud

The mobile office is a staple in corporate life today, but before the last two decades, working via your laptop while on the go was not a common practice. Employees would have to travel to and from work with a briefcase full of papers, but today, everything is stored in the cloud using Dropbox, Google Drive, or another cloud storage service. This makes it easily accessible from any phone or computer, drastically decreasing the size and weight of the average workbag.

#4. Smartphones

More than any other innovation, smartphones have allowed employees to work from anywhere at any time. Instantly receiving and responding to emails, texts, and phone calls.

#5. Rolodex vs. CRM

Customer Relationship Management, or CRM, allows companies to sort and analyze customer information in a way that allows them to better serve each individual customer – something that was not possible with a Rolodex.

#6. Websites

One of the biggest online presences for any company is its website. The vast majority of people check the internet before they leave their house in search of goods or services, so having a website that represents your company well can be a huge help in acquiring new clients. Also make sure your company is using SEO, or search engine optimization, to appear as high as possible in the search results.
